Murdo Fraser tabled a motion at Holyrood noting the 375th anniversary of the mass signing of the National Covenant in Greyfriars Kirkyard on February 28, 1638. He said: "This remarkable assertion of the right of the people to make decisions for themselves free from royal interference laid the foundations for our modern constitutional settlement. It led directly to a brutal civil war across the British Isles, and ultimately cost an obstinate king his head."
