HEATHROW Airport should be considered for renaming as the Margaret Thatcher International Airport, a Conservative MP has suggested.

Stephen Metcalfe, who represents South Basildon in Essex, has tabled a Westminster motion, calling for one of the UK's main airports to be renamed in tribute to the late prime minister, recognising her "colossal achievements" and as an "enduring testament to her contribution to the world".

While Mr Metcalfe said he had no particular airport in mind, he noted how Heathrow and Stansted might be considered for renaming.

"We need to commemorate the contribution she made to world politics in an enduring way. Maybe an airport will put itself forward," he added.

Other countries to honour past leaders by naming an airport after them include France, which named its main international airport in Paris after Charles de Gaulle, and America, which named New York's main airport after former president John F Kennedy.

Already, there have been calls for Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands to be renamed Port Margaret.
