CalMac Ferries boss to leave

THE managing director of CalMac Ferries is leaving the company.

The news of Phil Preston’s departure fuelled speculation among industry sources that the company may be preparing to restructure ahead of its next tendering operation, which must be completed by September 2013. It is thought unlikely its route network will be retained intact.

Mr Preston is one of the longest serving senior members of staff in the ferry company, having joined CalMac in 1993 before it was divided into seven different companies in preparation for the tendering of its Clyde and Hebrides routes ahead of October 2007.In April 2009 he became MD of CalMac Ferries, the arm which runs all but the Gourock/Dunoon and Orkney and Shetland routes.Archie Robertson, chief executive of David MacBrayne, the umbrella company, said: “We wish to announce the departure from the company of our current managing director, Philip Preston. Following internal discussions, Philip has agreed to step down from his role as MD and will be departing the company in early course as part of a re-focus. Throughout his employment Philip has maintained excellent relations with colleagues and associates. ”When asked whether Mr Preston’s departure presaged further restructuring, a spokesman said: “All companies evolve.”
