David Cameron and his wife Samantha began their summer holiday with a visit to a Portuguese fish market.

The couple strolled around the stalls at the market at Aljezur on the Algarve before buying squid.

The Prime Minister and his wife arrived in Portugal yesterday, with their three children, and are spending just under two weeks in the area.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg faced criticism earlier this month after it emerged that both he and Mr Cameron would be abroad on holiday at the same time – for the second year in a row.

The Liberal Democrat leader is due to fly to Spain with his family for his annual break.

Speaking on his radio programme earlier this month, he had said: "Both the Prime Minister and I have a lot of faith in other senior members of the Government ... that they can hold the fort."

Labour leader Ed Miliband and his family are reported to be holidaying in France.
