Centenarian visits axed

Revised data protection rules mean people reaching their 100th birthday and couples celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary are missing out on celebratory visits from dignitaries.

It is a tradition for local authorities to send politicians to see sprightly centenarians or spouses who have been married for 60 years.

But the National Records of Scotland has axed its policy of informing councils of upcoming anniversaries after receiving an advisory from Buckingham Palance, which claimed to do so would "breach privacy guidelines".
