If rock and roll can stop the traffic, as Bono once said, what does that make John and Edward, aka Jedward?

Britain’s most famous twins and X Factor rejects will appear tonight at a Glasgow bar, but the frenzy around them is expected to be so intense that the owners have hired additional security and liaised with police about possible city centre traffic disruption.

The duo will fly into Scotland on a private jet before appearing in Falkirk and then Glasgow. Queues are expected to form from 5pm this evening outside Campus on Sauchiehall Street to catch a glimpse of the Grimes twins, who are not expected on stage until midnight.

“It is like Beatlemania, it’s incredible,” said Cameron Craig, Campus’ entertainment manager. “We’ve had JLS a few times, Peter Andre, some really high profile people. But the response to John and Edward has been overwhelming. It is unbelievable. They are really creating a buzz. It’s a phenomenon. We’re going to have a full house. People will be slowing down to try and get a glimpse of them from the car.”

The twins were voted off the X Factor last weekend following an unlikely run into the show’s later rounds. Their ‘unique’ take on Britney Spears’ Oops I Did It Again, for which they donned the diva’s trademark tight red leather jumpsuit, and their take on the Ghostbusters theme tune, have earned the duo derision from the press and judge Simon Cowell, but a rabid cult following. Jedward fan pages on the social networking site Facebook heavily outnumber those decrying their tuneless, uncoordinated routines.

Fans in Glasgow have been preparing all week for the arrival of the bequiffed Irish duo.

“I was so excited when they left because I was going to be able to see them,” said Zoe Brennan, an 18-year-old student at Glasgow Caledonian University. “I’ve been waiting every week for them to go out. They make me laugh. They got really bad press but they still came out and did their own thing. They didn’t let it get them down. I’ll be there in the front row.”

Even those slightly more sceptical about Jedward’s star quality will make the pilgrimage tonight.

“I don’t know whether I’d like to hug them or punch them,” said Tara Schwelm, a 21-year-old student at Strathclyde University. “I’ll decide once I see them. I hated them from the very start but was actually gutted when they went out last week. Their following is mental. I was one of the ones that couldn’t understand it at the time, but now I am one of them.”

Jamie Archer played at Campus last weekend having been booted off the show the previous week. He failed to stop the traffic on Sauchiehall Street, but it looks like Jedward just might.
