Climber dies after falling on Ben Nevis

A man has died after falling 300ft on the UK’s highest mountain.

A rescue operation was launched after police received a report of a man falling on Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis at around 11am on Saturday.

Lochaber Mountain Rescue responded to the call and a helicopter from Prestwick was dispatched.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said the man had died in the fall. His identity has not yet been announced. His death came exactly a week after four climbers died and a fifth was seriously injured when they were struck by an avalanche on Bidean nam Bian in Glencoe. Tower Ridge is one of several ridges protruding north-west from the summit plateau of 4,409ft Ben Nevis. Police said the climber was rescued from Tower Gully but had sustained fatal injuries.The force said he is believed to have fallen around 300ft.
