Colonel's historic role

Four centuries of tradition were honoured in a historic ceremony with Colonel John Lewis Kelly appointed as the Deacon Convener of Trades House in Glasgow.

Colonel Kelly, who will also assume the role of Third Citizen of Glasgow for one year, retired last year as a senior army officer following an extensive military career.

The Trades House, a charitable organisation established in 1605, is dedicated to benevolent works donating almost £500,000 a year. The deacon convener chooses a charity to benefit from major events during his year in office.
