Hundreds of crosses commemorating soldiers killed in action have been removed from a Glasgow bridge.

Glasgow City Council confirmed it had removed the fixtures from the city's Clyde Arc, also known as the Squinty Bridge, after receiving a number of complaints about them from local residents.

However artist Brian Carey, who created the crosses, some of which contained political messages, has accused the council of insensitivity.

He said: "Every name on that bridge was important to somebody - be it a Syrian family or parents in Glasgow.

"They could have taken the lettering and left the crosses. They've been a bit insensitive.

"I wish they'd given me the chance to take the work down myself."

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: "The crosses, along with political stickers that had been placed on the bridge, were removed at the request of a councillor who had received complaints from local residents."
