POLICE are investigating reports of "inappropriate contact" by a doctor towards a patient at a hospital.

A female patient is understood to have lodged a complaint about the conduct of a male doctor at Wishaw General Hospital in North Lanarkshire last week.

The woman was understood to have been admitted to the hospital suffering from chest pains.

NHS Lanarkshire said a formal investigation was now under way.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said they received reports of the alleged incident and were investigating.

She said: "We can confirm that we are investigating a report of inappropriate contact within Wishaw General Hospital which we received at the end of July. Inquiries are ongoing."
