Concern over the number of attacks on teachers

Up to six teachers a day in Edinburgh and the Lothians are being attacked by children as young as four, according to new figures.

There were 1278 violent physical assaults against school staff across the area in the academic year to June.

There were also attacks involving scissors, chairs and a knife, as well as incidents of pupils kicking, punching, headbutting and biting teachers, while several staff members had clumps of hair pulled out. In one example, a teacher suffered a dislocated jaw and chipped teeth after being headbutted by a pupil.
