THOUSANDS of delegates are expected to spend £150 million in Scotland's biggest city as it prepares to stage a record number of conferences.

A total of 8500 people will attend the International Bible Students Association in Glasgow while 4000 will be at the European Breast Cancer Conference in March. The RenewableUK Offshore Wind Conference in June will bring in 3000 delegates.

The Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society Europe Conference will take place in September and the LibDems autumn conference is in October, each attracting 5000 delegates. It is an added boost for a city set to welcome spectators to the Commonwealth Games in the summer.

Scott Taylor, chief executive of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "To be honest it's the equivalent of having 10 European Cup finals in Glasgow.

"This is just going to be a momentous year for Glasgow. There will be the highest ever number of major conferences coming to Glasgow, and many are coming to the city for the first time. "
