The Lanark author was joined by fellow guests including as musician Stuart Braithwaite, guitarist with the band Mogwai, Mark Hogarth, creative director of Harris Tweed and former Labour culture spokeswoman Pauline McNeill at the debate in the Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA).
The event was chaired by Ken McCluskey.
The focus was on the impact the vote would have on the arts community, from the issue of funding to the impact on opportunities internationally.
Topics covered during the event included the future role of the BBC if the country votes Yes to independence in next September's referendum was also discussed.
The all-ticket event was part of a series of six debates at the CCA. Other events focus on key areas such as The Arts, Women and Young People and how a Yes or No vote might impact.
