EMERGENCY services have quarantined at least one man and closed roads following concerns about cyanide contamination on Lewis.

It is understood an estate worker in Uig found cyanide in a lodge and had been trying to decant it when an accident happened and he is thought to have ingested some of the poison. He was being driven to the Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway when he was intercepted by police at Achmore and ordered not to proceed for fear of contaminating other people.

A roadside decontamination unit was set up, and two of the three routes to the west side of the island were closed.
