A CYCLIST who was killed after a collision with a Hackney cab has been named as Bryan Simons.

Family and friends yesterday paid tribute to Mr Simons, 40, who died after the accident at Corstorphine Road in Edinburgh on Monday morning.

Lothian and Borders Police said he died at the scene after sustaining a serious head injury. The taxi driver was not hurt.

A police spokesman said: "This incident happened during a busy rush-hour period and the area would have been busy with pedestrians. We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact the police."

It follows the deaths of two other cyclists in the capital after being in collision with vehicles.

Audrey Fyfe, 75, died after suffering severe head injuries in a collision with a car in Portobello Road at its junction with Craigentinny Avenue on August 9 last year, and Andrew McNicoll, 43, was killed in a crash on Lanark Road in January.

In December, James Bann McIntyre, 31, died after being knocked down in Kennishead Road, Thornliebank, East Renfrewshire, after he was alleged to have been struck by a taxi.

The accident on Monday prompted Lothians MSP Alison Johnstone to call for a cycle safety summit to bring together key authorities and road users on the issue.
