A MAN has died and four people, including two children, have been injured following a serious car accident on a notorious road.

Five people were in the vehicle, which overturned and ended up on its roof following the crash on the A75 Gretna-Stranraer Euro-route near Annan.

Two fire appliances from Annan rushed to the scene of the crash and firefighters had to use cutting equipment to free one man who was trapped in the wreckage. He died as a result of his injuries.

The injured were helped at the roadside by passing motorists and then taken by ambulance to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary but no details of their condition have been released.

Police Scotland closed the road, the main route linking the ferry ports at Cairnryan with the A74/M74 Glasgow to Carlisle motorway, for several hours after the collision at around 3.30pm yesterday. It meant a 20-mile diversion through Lochmaben.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are still investigating the accident which involved only the one vehicle."
