Decisive English victory

July 20, 1651, was a pivotal moment for Scotland as Cromwell's army won the last major set-piece battle north of the Border of the civil war.

Four thousand Cromwellian troops had crossed the Forth from Leith and set up camp on Ferryhills at North Queensferry, from where they launched the last push to conquer Scotland.

Scotland had bound itself to the new King Charles just as England was now a revolutionary republic. In retaliation, Cromwell invaded Scotland in 1650 and inflicted a severe defeat on the Army of the Covenant at Dunbar. The Scots lost more than 4000 men and had 10,000 more captured.
