HUNDREDS of thousands of bargain-hungry shoppers hit Scotland's high streets in the hope of benefiting from massive post-Christmas discounts.

Buchanan Street in Glasgow was awash with sale signs and shopping bags as consumers welcomed reductions of up to 80%.

Shoppers queued outside stores prior to opening, while some retailers were forced to operate a one-in-one-out policy.

Cumbernauld couple Ann Gartshore, 45, and Ian Frame, 42, right, said they had managed to bag plenty of bargains.

Ms Gartshore said: "We've got boots, jeans, jackets and hoodies. We've done really well.

"We got 50% off a hoodie and a pair of jeans, 30% off another pair of jeans and I managed to get half-price Ugg boots. Unfortunately the jacket I wanted was still full price but I bought it anyway.

"We've been in since about 9.30am and the shops have only got busier as the day's gone on."

Friends Emma Russell and Rebecca Walker, both 16, of Newton Mearns, were also in high spirits as they went about spending the money they got for Christmas.

Emma said: "I've got a new jacket, shoes, shirts and make-up and we managed to get even bigger discounts because we've got a Young Scot card, so it has been great.

"A lot of the shops are offering more than half price off and are really busy, but the queues are moving quite quickly so it's not too bad."

In the city's Buchanan Galleries, marketing consultant Chris Watts, 30, of Glasgow, queued to get into clothing store Hollister.

He said: "Because of my size, as I'm tall and broad, the sales are great for me. I always get good stuff because the bigger sizes and longer lengths are always left.

"I'm in shopping just now because my mum bought me a top for Christmas that was too small and I need to change it over, then I'm going to look for a new suit and new shirts."

However, renewables development manager Robin Simpson, from East Kilbride, said he was disappointed with the sales.

Despite having several shopping bags, he said: "I'd been having a look around before Christmas and had my eye on a couple of things and decided to take a chance and see if they went into the sales.

"But they didn't have my size in them unfortunately.

"I've just bought a few T-shirts for myself instead, but I don't think it has really been that much cheaper than normal.

"There are a few half-price sales on but that's it. I came in at around 10.30am and I think the best bargains were probably already gone by then."
