IT is a home you build by clicking different 'modules' together and could just be the next big thing in environmentally-friendly living.

Scottish designer Sam Booth has unveiled an eco-friendly house that can cost as little as £18,000 and does not need to be connected to the electricity grid.

The home is a scaled down version of Mr Booth's ECHO module, which was launched in 2013 and featured on Channel 4 programme 'Amazing Spaces'.

It is created from a a range of pre-cut components that click together, and is powered by solar panels.

Co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Dumfries and Galloway Council's Business Gateway Plus, the homes, dubbed WAVE Pods, will be unveiled at at this year's Grand Designs Live, which runs from May 2 to 10 in London.

Mr Booth said: "We love building the bespoke ECHO modules but they are very time-consuming and can be difficult to pre-plan due to the planning process.

"We built six modules in our first year, which was a great achievement, but the sharp reality of the first year made us realise we needed to make strategic changes to the business model to ensure our sustainability.

"The pre-cut version will help us 'fill the gap' by providing environmentally conscious design enthusiasts with an affordable, almost 'off the shelf' build that still has a bespoke element to it."
