PEOPLE living in parts of Ayrshire needed sandbags to prevent their homes being flooded after torrential rain swept across much of Scotland.

More than 160 bags were given out by South Ayrshire Council staff in Troon after more than 60 calls from residents.

Other towns badly affected included Ayr, Coylton, Culroy, Dundonald, Dunure, Kirkmichael, Mossblown, Prestwick and Tarbolton.

Mike Newall, the council’s head of planning and enterprise, said: “We are doing all we can to help our local communities who are affected by this flooding and our staff are out there in horrendous conditions in an effort to make a positive difference.”

The Met Office urged people in south-west and central Scotland to take extra care, as flooding caused chaos on the roads.
