The cuts at Direct Line come as the company prepares to trim down ahead of its imminent sale, a condition of RBS receiving a £45 billion state bailout in 2008.
The deepest of cuts will come at its call centre in Teesside, which is likely to close. Around 500 jobs will go there, with the remaining 400 posts to be shed at its 15 sites across the UK, including Glasgow. Direct Line employs around 15,000 nationwide.
