One of Scotland's classic modern films, Trainspotting, could soon have a sequel, its director Danny Boyle has said.

Boyle said he hopes to make the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's book Porno in 2016.

The Oscar-winning director said John Hodge, who wrote the original Trainspotting screenplay as well as those for Boyle films Shallow Grave, A Life Less Ordinary and The Beach, is working on the sequel which is "very loosely based" on Porno, author Irvine Welsh's sequel to the original book.

Boyle wants to reunite the original cast, including Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremner, Kelly Macdonald and Jonny Lee Miller.

He said: "This has been a long time coming. There's always been this long term plan for 'Trainspotting 2', if John can produce a decent enough script, I don't think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back.

"I think they'll want to know that the parts are good so they don't feel like they are letting anyone down."

Boyle added: "The reason for doing it again is that people cherish the original, people remember it or have caught up with it if they never saw because they were younger."
