The baby was in hospital suffering from scalds to the face and neck when consultant Dr Kiran Patwardhan took over his care at the Sick Kids hospital, in Edinburgh.
He allowed a junior doctor to remove a breathing tube and made a series of mistakes when things went wrong, the hearing was told. A colleague was called to take control of the situation and the child known as 'Patient LS' was unharmed by the incident, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service heard.
Dr Patdwardhan has admitted to a string of errors relating to his treatment of three children in 2011 at the Edinburgh hospital.
But he denies a number of factual elements of the allegations, as well as giving inaccurate evidence to an investigation panel.
Dr Patwardhan is currently subject to several conditions that restrict him to working under close supervision of a consultant. The hearing continues.
