But as time wore on, it became clear there were big cultural differences in school administration between the United Arab Emirates and Scotland.
She says: "You have more added pressure from parents and the people in charge of the school. What counted was getting grades.
"If a child was failing, you were basically not allowed to say that. I found that difficult."
