IT was always going to be the box-office hit of the year, with more than 210,000 people buying tickets for a record-breaking 21 shows.

The full scale of the success of Still Game, however, has now emerged with new figures showing the run at the Hydro venue in Glasgow, which ends tonight, has grossed more than £6 million.

The show, created by Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan and featuring the full cast of the popular BBC programme, is likely to have been one of the most financially successful theatrical shows in Scottish history.

It has been filmed and will be released in DVD format, although as yet there are no further details of whether the show could tour or be staged elsewhere.

Kiernan said: "The whole Hydro experience has been mind-blowing. Our fans have given us the buzz that only pop stars get, and at our ages that is ridiculous.

"Still Game fans are world beaters."

A spokesman for the SSE Hydro said: "After originally going on sale with four dates before ramping up to an incredible 21 shows, Still Game: Live at The Hydro has been a phenomenal success.

"We are honoured to have hosted the return of such a well-loved cast and have welcomed loyal fans from across the country - it will definitely be sad to see them go."

The theatrical show starred the same ensemble as the TV series, with Kiernan as Jack and Hemphill as Victor, alongside Gavin Mitchell, Paul Riley, Sanjeev Kohli and Jane McCarry, and its reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.

Hemphill and Kiernan recently revealed the possibility of a television comeback for the series in the "next couple of years".

Hemphill said of a new TV series: "We are not the guys who will be able to say it's coming back - it is the BBC who can say when and where.

"But we have said to them that we'd like to do a series, on the back of how we have written this Hydro show. The wind is in our sails - we want to do a series.

"So the BBC said OK and went away to think about it: that is where it is at."

Kiernan added: "We are happy to bring it back, but as [Greg] said, the wheels at the BBC turn slowly."

Asked whether the new show could tour, Hemphill said: "I think the answer is probably. But the truth is that this is such a big project for us - definitely the biggest thing we've done. It feels disloyal to it to be thinking beyond it, so I am focusing on that."

Another popular Scottish act, Kevin Bridges, has added three more dates to his 2015 tour, including one at the Hydro on October 1 and another at the Aberdeen GE Oil & Gas Arena on October 8.

Tickets go on general sale for all tour dates from 10am today after a pre-sale. The tour includes five nights at the SSE Hydro, where he will record his third stand-up DVD.
