Gas production can resume from an installation in the North Sea that was evacuated after a "significant" leak last year.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said it had accepted the safety case for the Elgin platform, which is owned by a subsidiary company of Total.

The site, about 150 miles east of Aberdeen, was evacuated when it started leaking gas last March.

A spokesman said: "HSE has informed Total that we have accepted the safety case for the Elgin installation. This follows an incident on March 25 last year, which resulted in a significant leak of gas."
