Country music star Emmylou Harris has been charged over a hit-and-run accident.

The Grammy-winning singer is accused of failing to exchange information with a driver whose car she hit on a freeway in Los Angeles on October 1.

A criminal complaint filed in Beverly Hills did not contain additional details about the accident or how much damage occurred. It is thought Harris ws driving a rental car.

A publicist for the 65-year-old singer did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

She is understood to have pleaded not guilty and said she didn't realise contact had been made with the other car.

Harris has won a dozen Grammys for her solo work and collaborations with artists such as Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Alison Krauss, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, and others.

She continues to tour and is due to release an album of duets in late February. Harris has regularly appeared in Scotland.
