ENERGY experts will offer up their views on the future of the power industry at a debate being held in Glasgow later this year.

The Powering the Future event will take place at the city's Science Centre on May 5 and members of the public are being invited to attend the free event and take part in the discussion.

The Herald is a partner in the event which will feature Professor Peter mcGregor from Strathclyde University, Gordon Ballard, of the world's largest oilfield services firm Schlumberger UK Ltd, Brian Cowell, director of Nuclear Operations at EDF Energy, Ken Cronin, of United Kingdom Onshore Oil and Gas, and Niall Stuart, chief executive of Scottish Renewables.

Stephen Breslin, chief executive of Glasgow Science Centre, said: "We've been working with the energy industry for the last couple of years to develop a project and what we want to is create a platform where we can have a rational discussion about the future issues affecting energy supply.

"We're all consumers of electricity, we're all stakeholders and it's important we understand some of the compromises and the balances that have to be made when looking at future options.

"With this event we're trying to give the public an opportunity to question some of the senior industry experts and develop a better understanding of some of the very difficult choices that have to be made.

"Energy is one of those areas where you get very polarised opinions.

"The information at this event will hopefully offer a more balanced view and help to develop an understanding of just how complex an equation it all is."

Herald columnist Iain MacWhirter will chair the event, which begins at 6.30pm.
