SCOTLAND was beset by heavy rain while the hottest temperatures of the year were recorded south of the Border.

Some Glasgow roads suffered flooding as 22 mm of rain fell on the city yesterday.

But the wettest place in Scotland was Eskdalemuir in Dumfries and Galloway which had 27mm of rain.

But while the lowest temperature of 14.2°C was recorded in Aberdeenshire yesterday morning, Heathrow reached 33.7°C. The Met Office said that made it the hottest day of the year so far and the hottest since July, 2006.

But forecasters say that Scotland can expect things to change today, with less rain and lower temperatures.

A Met Office spokesman said: "For Friday you can expect a mixture of sunshine and showers, with the odd heavy one over high ground and a moderate south westerly breeze. Temperatures will be around 22°C in Glasgow but up to 24°C in Elgin and on the Moray Coast, so a nice mild day.

"Over the weekend, there will be showers and there will be a fresher feel.

"We will start to lose the warm humid air as we go through Friday into Saturday. Some rain in the north west, and a mixture of sunshine and showers for the rest of us.

"Temperatures likely to be around 18°C, which is still quite pleasant."

Yesterday's temperatures in England and Wales were said to be hotter than Barcelona, Cape Town, Mumbai and Venice - prompting bookies to offer odds that August would be a record breaker.

A meteorological phenomenon dubbed the 'Spanish Plume' was said to be behind yesterday's spike in temperatures in England and Wales.
