EU law threat to alcohol move

PLANS for a minimum price for alcohol by next year could hit the buffers as it goes through Parliament, with drinks giants expected to refer the plans to the European Commission and predictions it will flounder under EU law.

With the SNP Government confirming its plans for a minimum price for alcohol on Wednesday, with an expected date for the introduction as early as next spring, The Herald understands at least one major player in the drinks industry will move to have the matter referred to the European courts as soon as details on issues such as unit price emerge.
