EUROMILLIONS winner Christine Weir has been caught up in a fresh internet scam, after a hoax email claimed that she was preparing to give away $5 million (£3m) to members of the public.

The identities of Mrs Weir and husband Colin, the Largs couple who scooped a £161 million jackpot in 2011, have been repeatedly hijacked by fraudsters seeking personal information from naive internet users.

In the latest con, an email claiming to be from Mrs Weir states that the couple's charitable trust have decided to give $1m to five people, "to put smiles into homes and hearts of people worldwide". In previous scams, it was claimed that emails were sent by Mr Weir, with sums of between £1.5m and £5m on offer.

Potential victims are asked to contact a lawyer who it is claimed is acting on behalf of the Weirs, and provide personal details including names, an address and mobile phone numbers.

A spokeswoman for the couple said: "Neither the Weirs nor the Weir Charitable Trust will ever email unsolicited offers of money to anyone, in any currency. If you are approached by someone claiming to be them, or their representative, and asking you to provide personal or financial details, it is a scam."
