The former president of Scotland's soup empire Baxters has left tens of thousands of pounds to local charities in his will.

Gordon Baxter has bequeathed almost £200,000 to causes close to his heart.

Mr Baxter, who transformed the small family preserves business into one of the world's most recognisable food companies, died at the age of 95 last year.

He gifted £100,000 to the school of medicine at Aberdeen University for research into heart and lung diseases.

And he left £10,000 to the Baxters Angling Club and £10,000 to Elgin Museum, where he was on the board of directors. He also donated £20,000 to the Burn of Fochabers Woodland Trust. Trust member Chris Sugden said: "Gordon wanted future generations of children to gain some enjoyment from the burn and the woodland strip he had as a child.

"He was instrumental in setting up the trust in 2004 and always took a keen interest in our work."
