THE manuscript of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Illustrious Client is to be displayed for the first time.

Currently owned by the National Library of Scotland, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work is to feature in a major new exhibition opening next month at the Museum of London.

It means fans of the fictional detective will be able to search for clues in the author's own handwriting as to who the Illustrious Client - never revealed in the story - actually is.

The manuscript was bequeathed to the Scottish nation by the author's daughter Dame Jean Conan Doyle, yet held in a London vault while Scottish museums vied to display it.

Now the new exhibition aims to invite discussion as to why Holmes still conjures up enduring fascination. Holmes has transcended literature on to stage and screen and continues to attract huge audiences to this day.
