Factfile Major gains for Labour

Labour gained control of six councils in the English local elections, adding 292 councillors to bring its number of seats to 1891.

Ukip gained 155 councillors leaving them with at least 157 members in local government.

It was a dismal night for the Tories, who lost control of 11 councils and lost 201 members, taking their total number of councils they control to 40. They retain 1259 seats.

Their LibDem partners fared worse, with the loss of 284 members. They lost control of two authorities leaving them with only 404 councillors and power in six authorities. The Greens picked up 17 seats, leaving them with 35 councillors. Others, including independents, picked up 21 seats leaving them on 111.
