A BRITISH woman has plunged nearly 100ft to her death while walking in a remote canyon in central Australia on Sunday.

Local police said the 23-year-old fell from the Rim Walk at Kings Canyon in the afternoon.

She was treated at the scene but died a short time later.

The woman was believed to have been with a tour group when she fell at the beauty spot, which is in Watarrka National Park in Australia's Northern Territory.

A spokesman for Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services said: "Police are investigating the death of a 23-year-old British woman who fell from the Rim Walk at Kings Canyon on Sunday afternoon.

"A coordinated response from Police, Watarrka National Park Ranger Station, Kings Canyon Clinic staff, District Medical Officer, St John Ambulance and NT Emergency Service were able to locate and retrieve the woman who had fallen 30 metres."

One report in Australia said the woman had been posing for photographs just moments before she fell. It is understood that other tourists raised the alarm and park rangers were first on the scene.

Northern Territory Duty Superintendent Kylie Proctor said: "Our thoughts are with the woman's family along with the national parks personnel and emergency services that responded to the incident."

A Foreign Office spokesman said in statement: "We are aware of the death of a British national on Monday 16 June in the King Canyon area of Australia.
