THE worldwide search for the successor to the director of Edinburgh's annual International Festival has begun.

Jonathan Mills, whose first festival was in 2007, is stepping down after programming his eighth festival in 2014.

By the time the Australian director and composer leaves his post he will become the third longest serving director in the event's 64-year history.

Mr Mills's successor will be chosen by the Festival Council, members of the festival's governing body and Sir Nicholas Kenyon CBE.
