CELTIC Connections, Glasgow's high-profile folk, roots and world music festival, could mark its 20th anniversary next year with a centrepiece event at The Hydro, the city's new entertainment venue.

The festival's organisers are also casting their gaze at the Emirates Arena, which opened in the city's east end a few months ago.

Celtic Connections was first staged in January 1994 and has gone on to become a world-renowned event.

The Hydro opens in September and the showcase event will have a Commonwealth Games theme to reflect the sports extravaganza that gets underway in Glasgow in the summer of 2014.

The £120 million 12,000-capacity arena has already attracted names such as Peter Gabriel, JLS and Miranda Hart.

Donald Shaw, the artistic director of Celtic Connections, said: "I really like the idea, right in the middle of the festival, of having a centrepiece gig that would be held somewhere like The Hydro.

"It needs to be the right thing, where it feels special enough. We also have the new arena in the east end."

Building work on The Hydro, next to the SECC and Clyde Auditorium, began last February.
