Festive spend hopes

CONSUMER spending will help the economy return to growth before the end of the year as shoppers hit the high street in the lead-up to Christmas, according to economists.

Forecasters anticipate a spending boost will have a positive effect on the wider economic picture as shoppers lead a revival to counter the country's poor export performance. The autumn report from Ernst & Young's Item (Independent Treasury Economic Model) Club – which uses the Treasury's model for predicting conditions – states that growth was stifled in the first half of the year because of "deeply disappointing" trade figures.
