PEOPLE are being urged to sign up to a campaign to stop the closure of a Tesco store which has become a community "lifeline".

The Tesco store in Kirkcaldy contains a Post Office and a cafe, both of which are used regularly by local residents.

The fight to save it has been backed by Fife Council, who hosted a rally at the weekend as part of the campaign.

Council leader David Ross said: "Tesco Kirkcaldy is more than just a town centre supermarket; it's a lifeline.

"As well as housing the Post Office and a café, Tesco Kirkcaldy is centrally located, next to the bus station, which means it's easily accessible for anyone who relies on public transport.

"Public support is essential. If Tesco Kirkcaldy is to stay open people need to sign the petition, use social media and keep shopping in the store to show support for store staff.

"This will help drive our campaign forward and convince Tesco that keeping the Kirkcaldy store open is the right thing to do."

The council said it has been in contact with the owners of the shopping centre where the store is based, as well as Tesco and the Scottish Government to see what can be done to keep the it open.

Local MP Gordon Brown is also meeting with Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis later this month to discuss the situation.

Meanwhile, Tesco has confirmed up to 10,000 jobs could go at the retail giant as it attempts to reverse a slump in sales and profits.
