FIREFIGHTERS battling a blaze in Dundee were pelted with stones and spat on by a "mob of children" aged as young as 10.

Tayside Fire and Rescue were trying to put out a bin fire on a housing estate in the city's Whitfield area at around 10.15pm on Wednesday when they came under attack from the group.

The crews were forced to withdraw from Ormiston Crescent after a floodlight on the front of a fire engine was damaged.

The firefighters, from Kingsway fire station, feared the windscreen could have been smashed.

Tayside Fire and Rescue Group Manager Scott Thomson said: "The crews were dealing with a secondary fire when a mob of young children started to congregate.

"These were children as young as 10, throwing stones and spitting.

"The crews had to withdraw from the scene."
