Fire Service left with £230,000 bill

SPENDING watchdogs have warned that Scotland's new Fire and Rescue Service may be left to pick up the £230,000 bill for allowing Strathclyde's top fire officer to retire and be re-employed.

The Accounts Commission has outlined a list of concerns stemming from the decision to allow Brian Sweeney, 50, to step down as firemaster, collecting a lump sum pension payment and then re-hiring him a month later in the £150,000-a-year job.
