Fired for joke with jurors

A SENIOR court official was sacked after joking that former Rangers manager Walter Smith "stole the league trophy from Celtic".

Bert Salisbury, a sheriff clerk depute, made the comment to members of the public who had been called for jury service at Greenock Sheriff Court in 2011.

Mr Salisbury, 45, told them: "The case to be tried is against Walter Smith, manager of Rangers, and the charge is that he stole the league trophy from Celtic last year."
