Greg Barrowman, who attends the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, is the official stand-in on the show and will continue in the lead role while his more famous cousin is ill.

A spokeswoman for the SECC said they would be treating the situation on a day-by-day basis. Richard Linford, company manager, said: “Regrettably, John has had to pull out of performances of Aladdin as he is suffering from heavy flu and slight pleurisy on one lung.

“John’s only aim at the moment is to get better and back on stage. As you know he is an entertainer with a capital E and he will back as soon as he is able.”
