Footballer's crash death 'avoidable'

THE death of a professional footballer in an off-road driving accident could have been avoided, if the motorist behind the wheel was not travelling so fast, a sheriff has ruled.

Dumbarton Football Club captain Gordon Lennon, 26, was electrocuted when the 4x4 he was travelling in crashed into an electricity pole near Dingwall in the Highlands in 2009.

The Northern Ireland-born player, who lived in Paisley, Renfrewshire, was taking a weekend break with his family, just weeks after he led his club to the Irn-Bru Third Division title.
