THE life and work of the largely forgotten sculptor William Lamb is to be celebrated in a book.

Lamb was a prolific artist whose subjects included the poet Hugh MacDiarmid, but he died in 1951 in obscurity.

John Stansfeld, the author of the new book, says he hopes it will bring the Scottish artist to a wider audience.

Born in Montrose, the right-handed Lamb had to learn to use his left after being wounded in the First World War.

Mr Stansfeld, a retired businessman from Montrose, has based much of his book on an archive of Lamb material, including letters, cuttings and diaries.

He said: "As soon as I saw all the material I realised here was a truly fascinating life story of a very major, if unsung, Scottish sculptor. I hope this book will go some way to re-establishing his place in Scottish art history."
