TRIBUTES were paid last night to Ken Cargill, the former head of news at BBC Scotland, who has died at the age of 65.

Mr Cargill, who became head of TV news in 1988 and went on to lead radio, sport and news online, died at his home in Angus after a battle with cancer.

Last night Ken MacQuarrie, director of BBC Scotland, said: "Ken Cargill was a hugely talented journalist who led the BBC Scotland news team during a period of huge change and through some major stories of international significance.

"He was a big personality who had an incisive mind and a superb understanding of what audiences wanted from the BBC news team."

Mark Byford, BBC deputy director-general and former head of BBC Journalism, said: "Ken was one of the very best colleagues I had the privilege to work with at the BBC.

"He had outstanding judgment and was filled with integrity, wisdom and experience."

The University of Edinburgh graduate joined the BBC in 1972 as a researcher and went on to become its head of TV and radio news and current affairs.

Mr Cargill is survived by his wife Una, his mother and his sister.
