Former television presenter Carol Smillie and tennis star Annabel Croft have launched an underwear range aimed at helping women.

They have developed a company called DiaryDoll which manufactures ladies underwear with a waterproof panel which provides extra protection for women during heavy periods or while playing sport

Ms Smillie's transition from Changing Rooms presenter to businesswoman also helped win her a Sporting Chance Innovation Award for changing the way women think about the monthly menstrual cycle and encouraging women to continue with sporting activities.

She said: "Research showed that up to 60 per cent of women admitted to missing out on social or sporting events because of their monthly cycle."

She said the venture was "just too good an idea to pass up on - it really was quite intuitive".

She added: "Annabel suffered from endometriosis as a teenager when she was playing on the tennis circuit and could also relate to having to stay away from home as a youngster on tour."
