THE Scots singer who found worldwide fame after her songs featured in the animated film Brave has dedicated her success to her "amazing mother".

Julie Fowlis shot to stardom after two of her songs featured in the Disney Pixar smash hit.

But she said she only took up singing full-time 10 years ago after her mother fell seriously ill with Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland's Stark Talk, to be broadcast today, she said she was working as an education development officer for traditional music at the time, but her mother's illness was the spur to pursue her dream.

She said: "My mum took seriously ill in 2002, completely out of the blue, and suddenly within 24 hours had gone from an outgoing very active mum, to being paralysed from the neck down.

"It just really changed my outlook on life."

Fowlis has had mainstream success despite singing mainly in Gaelic. She said 2012 had been "a total adventure from start to finish". but added that all her success was dedicated to her mother: "She is a really inspiring character.

"She fought so hard. They told her she would probably never walk again and she managed to walk down the isle with me when I got married.

"She's back to a good level of health and she bakes and knits for my two girls, and is the doting granny."

l Julie Fowlis is on Stark Talk, BBC Radio Scotland, today at 2.05pm.
