DETECTIVES have received a file on the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) amid claims of accounting irregularities.

The specialist fraud unit at Lothian and Borders Police is looking into a file on the body passed to them by the ex-owner of Edinburgh Rugby, Bob Carruthers.

The papers relate to the period since the club was bought over by the union's sister company the Murrayfield Experience Ltd in 2007.

He claims a retention fund of £60,000 was put in place to cover any player costs accrued by the Murrayfield Experience in the takeover and the firm submitted a claim for £28,414.18.

However, the businessman said accounts lodged at Companies House indicate that, on the face of it, the firm was actually "dormant" at that time and did not have any staff to claim for.

Mr Carruthers said: "Our legal counsel has advised us to hand our file on SRU over to the police just to keep ourselves right.

"It contains all manner of documentation on SRU and Murrayfield Experience, including details of what appear to be irregular accounts and unaccounted monies. The accounts raise questions and we want a public inquiry."

A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "We've had a complaint regarding the SRU and we've just taken delivery of this file and are considering its contents. It's a fairly extensive document and it will take some time to fully examine it. We cannot confirm at this stage whether there will be an investigation or not."

No-one was available from the SRU to comment.
