Treasured artworks at the world-famous Burrell Collection in Glasgow, including pastels by Degas and Renoir, are to benefit from new funding which will protect them for future years.

The Burrell Collection in the city's south side is due to undergo a major, multi-million-pound restoration, and has benefited from new funding from Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS).

The £28,000 grant will be used by Glasgow Life, which runs the city's museums and galleries, to buy "bespoke storage"for its important collection of Dutch and French pastels, including Horses in the Rain by Degas as well as works by Manet, Renoir and Gauguin. The grant is one of 24 for galleries and museums across Scotland totalling £500,000.

Councillor Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life, said: "Sir William Burrell amassed an outstanding collection of Dutch and French works on pastel which now belong to the people of Glasgow.

"We're delighted MGS is supporting us and this will ensure these fantastic works are appreciated by generations to come."

In January it was revealed Glasgow is to launch a bid to change shipping magnate Sir William's famous bequest of the collection that bears his name to ensure the jewel in the crown of the city's galleries can go on tour abroad.
